The Land: Swarm

I’ll admit I was skeptical about diving into Book 4 of *The Land* without starting from the beginning—but *Swarm* hooked me in under an hour. Kong’s worldbuilding is deceptively deep; Mist Village isn’t just a backdrop, it’s a character, with its own politics, scars, and desperate ingenuity. The swarm antagonists are refreshingly *alien*—not just reskinned orcs or zombies, but a relentless, adaptive force that forces Richter to think three steps ahead. That said, the middle act sags slightly under the weight of its own lore dumps. Kong’s love for his magic system is evident, but a few explanations (particularly around the village’s defensive wards) could’ve been tightened without losing impact. Nick Podehl’s performance is what elevates this from great to *unputdownable*. His Richter sounds like a man who’s been broken and reforged—there’s a rasp in his voice during exhausted monologues, a manic edge when he’s improvising mid-battle. The swarm’s voices, a chorus of clicks and hisses, are legitimately skin-crawling, and Podehl’s timing during the siege sequences is flawless. My one critique? Some of the female characters’ voices veer into caricature, especially in emotional scenes. It’s a minor gripe in an otherwise stellar performance, but it pulled me out of the moment once or twice. What really stuck with me, though, was the *cost* of Richter’s victories. This isn’t a story where the hero wins and everyone cheers. There are pyres, betrayals, and moments where the "game" mechanics feel anything but fun. If you’re looking for a LitRPG with actual stakes—and a narrator who makes you *feel* them—*Swarm* delivers. Just clear your schedule; you won’t want to pause.
