About This Audiobook

Dinah Jefferies crafts a lush, atmospheric tale that feels like stepping into a forgotten postcard. Thirza Caruthers’s journey to the Dordogne isn’t just a new job—it’s a plunge into a world of crumbling grandeur, where the past clings to the walls like ivy. The chateau itself becomes a character, its secrets whispered through peeling wallpaper and locked rooms, each chapter peeling back another layer of intrigue. Jefferies excels at blending sensory detail with emotional depth; the scent of lavender, the weight of old letters, the creak of floorboards underfoot immerse you so completely you’ll forget you’re listening rather than walking the cracked stone paths yourself. But this isn’t a simple ghost story—it’s a meditation on memory, family, and the choices that echo across generations. The tension simmers until it boils, leaving you breathless in the very best way.

AudioBook Atlas

Genevieve Gaunt’s narration is the secret weapon of this audiobook, her voice a velvet glove sliding over Jefferies’ prose. She doesn’t just read the words—she inhabits them, shifting effortlessly between Thirza’s quiet determination, the brittle authority of her great-aunt, and the guttural French that drips like honey and venom in equal measure. The pacing is masterful, too; the slow burn of the early chapters pays off in a finale that’s as satisfying as it is unexpected. That said, the middle section meanders a bit, with some flashbacks feeling tacked-on rather than organic. And while Gaunt’s performance is stellar, a handful of minor mispronunciations (like “Dordogne” in the first chapter) grated on my nitpicky ears. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise stellar production. If you love historical fiction where the setting feels like another character, or if you’re a sucker for emotionally charged family sagas, this one’s a must-listen. I closed the final chapter feeling like I’d lost something precious—and that’s exactly the kind of ache I crave from a book.
