I went into *The March South* expecting another forgettable space opera, but Adams served up something far more brutal: a story that refuses to let you look away. The narration by Virtual Voice is a standout—not because it’s flashy, but because it *doesn’t overdo it*. The synthetic delivery avoids the pitfalls of over-emoting, which is crucial when you’re knee-deep in alien butchery and human despair. The voice nails the Rangers’ weary camaraderie, the civilians’ rising panic, and even the aliens’ chilling, guttural threats without resorting to cartoonish growls. That said, the pacing stumbles in the middle act, where the story lingers a beat too long on a secondary character’s arc—I wanted more momentum when the aliens were literally sharpening their knives. The production quality is top-notch, with no distracting glitches or volume drops, but I did notice a few lines where the digital voice’s pitch wavered slightly, as if the AI stumbled over Adams’ more complex alien terminology. Still, these are minor quibbles in what is otherwise a relentless listen. Adams’ worldbuilding is immersive without infodumping, and the climax—where our heroes outmaneuver an alien feast prep team—is so vivid you’ll swear you can smell the cooking spices.
