The Naturals

I picked up The Naturals expecting another compelling YA thriller, and I was utterly hooked from the very first listen. Amber Faith's narration is nothing short of phenomenal, perfectly capturing the distinct voices of Cassie, Alex, and even the enigmatic FBI handler, Mr. Thorne. She weaves tension with pitch-perfect timing, making the suspense genuinely palpable. Barnes crafts a fascinating premise with teens possessing extraordinary, often disturbing talents, and the story explores the moral dilemmas and psychological toll of their abilities with surprising depth. The characters feel real, their relationships complex, and the exploration of trust (and betrayal) within their tight-knit group is compelling. While the central mystery unfolds logically, some of the supernatural aspects surrounding the cases might feel a bit underdeveloped as the story progresses, leaving a few lingering questions rather than providing neat resolutions. It’s a fast-paced ride with moments of genuine unease and emotional weight, demonstrating Barnes's skill in balancing thrilling suspense with character-driven storytelling.
