The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Vol. 2

I first heard these adventures as a kid, curled up under a blanket during a summer thunderstorm, and Rathbone’s Holmes still sounds like a ghost from another era—deliciously so. His voice is all aristocratic edge and razor intellect, but what’s surprising is how playful he can be, especially in lighter cases like *The Case of the Singing Violin*. Nigel Bruce’s Watson, meanwhile, is a delightful paradox: loyal to a fault, yet perpetually one step behind the truth, his faux exasperation landing like a punchline. The production is a marvel of old-school radio craft, with sound effects that feel tactile—rain on cobblestones, a ticking clock that ratchets up tension, and the occasional off-screen scream that makes you flinch. My only quibbles? Some of the plots lean heavily on coincidence (looking at you, *The Case of the Haunted Groom*), and the 1940s gender dynamics occasionally feel jarring—Watson’s occasional chauvinism isn’t exactly subtle. But these are minor caveats in an otherwise stellar listen. The runtime flies by, the cases are consistently engaging, and Rathbone’s Holmes is the kind of character you’ll want to revisit again and again. If you love golden-age detective fiction or just crave a masterclass in vocal storytelling, this is a must-own.
