The Pariah

I’ll admit, I went into *The Pariah* expecting another swashbuckling outlaw adventure—maybe with a dash of Robin Hood idealism. Instead, I got a protagonist who’d probably slit Robin’s throat for the coins in his purse. Alwyn Scribe is a fantastic antihero precisely because he’s *not* trying to be one; he’s just a man who’s good at killing and bad at pretending otherwise. Ryan’s writing shines in the small, ugly details: the way a knife fight leaves your hands shaking, the exhausting math of survival when winter’s coming and your allies are scarcer than food. The plot twists aren’t shocking for the sake of it—they’re the natural consequence of a world where trust is a liability. Steven Brand’s narration elevates the material significantly. His Alwyn is weary but never whiny, his voice roughened by years of sleeping in the dirt and making hard choices. The supporting cast benefits from his range, too—particularly the aristocratic villain, whose cultured tones make his cruelty feel even more insidious. My only critique? The middle act drags slightly as Alwyn’s internal debates start to loop, and Brand’s pacing occasionally makes the philosophical tangents feel heavier than they are. Also, if you’re squeamish about animal suffering (there’s a *particularly* grim scene involving a dog), brace yourself. But these are minor quibbles. By the final act, the payoff is worth it: a climax that’s as emotionally raw as it is action-packed. This isn’t a fantasy for escapism—it’s for listeners who want their heroes flawed, their worldbuilding gritty, and their narration sharp enough to draw blood.
