Pierce’s real talent lies in her ability to make the absurdly wealthy *unlikable* without turning them into cartoons—these are people who believe their own hype, and that arrogance is what makes their downfall so satisfying. The murder itself is just the catalyst; the real story is Jessie’s navigation of a world where truth is a commodity and loyalty is a liability. I particularly loved how the investigation peels back layers of the victim’s life, revealing a web of blackmail, infidelity, and corporate sabotage that feels ripped from today’s headlines. Now, the narration: Ulka Mohanty is *excellent*, but I’ll say her pacing in the first hour feels almost *too* measured, like she’s holding back. Once the body drops, though, she leans into the material with a precision that’s downright chilling—her delivery of Jessie’s internal monologue, especially in moments of doubt, is some of the best I’ve heard in the genre. My only real critique is the audiobook’s production could’ve used a touch more atmospheric sound design. A thriller this visually rich (that mansion *begs* for mood-setting audio cues) deserves a little more immersion. Still, the writing and performance carry it. If you’re a fan of Tana French’s psychological depth or Gillian Flynn’s razor-edged social commentary—but want something that moves at the speed of a Netflix binge—this is your next listen.
