Dzieran’s opening chapter about black-market deals in 1970s Poland feels like a John le Carré short story squeezed into a family photo album. The man details a childhood where your ‘toy’ might be a scavenged piece of scrap metal, and your ‘dream job’ is emigration paperwork that costs more than your family’s monthly food ration. It’s bleak, darkly funny, and relentlessly human. Joel Richards’ narration is the secret weapon here. He doesn’t just read the words; he inhabits them. When Dzieran recounts the moment he’s accepted to SEAL training, Richards’ voice drops into a growl that sounds like a man who’s already tasted the saltwater and liked it. The pacing is tight, which is impressive given the scope—police-state oppression to global counterterrorism in a single bound. That said, I’ll nitpick two things. First, the audiobook occasionally lingers too long on tactical minutiae, where a tighter edit could sharpen the drama. Second, some of the Polish terminology gets butchered in pronunciation, which grates after a while. But these are minor flaws in a performance that otherwise feels like eavesdropping on a war story told by a guy who’s earned the right to tell it. If you want a memoir that treats military service as a brutal craft rather than a superhero origin story, this one delivers.
