The Plurality Principle

I’ve listened to my fair share of church-leadership audiobooks, and most fall into two camps: either they’re dry as week-old bread or so self-help-y they could’ve been written by a motivational speaker. Dave Harvey’s *The Plurality Principle* is the rare exception. Harvey’s narration is conversational, even folksy—like he’s debriefing you after a long day rather than delivering a lecture. He peppers the audiobook with stories from his own pastoral fails and successes, which makes his points land harder than they would in print. The chapter on elder selection alone is worth the runtime; Harvey doesn’t just define biblical leadership, he dissects the *process* of finding the right people, including the hard conversations leaders avoid until it’s too late. My biggest critique? Some of the examples feel dated, pulling from Harvey’s experiences in the 90s and early 2000s. While the principles hold, I found myself wishing for a few more contemporary case studies to make the stakes feel immediate. That said, the audiobook’s production is crisp—no distracting background noise, and Harvey’s voice carries just enough gravitas to keep things serious without feeling preachy. The only pacing hiccup is in the final third, where Harvey recaps previous chapters a bit too thoroughly for an audio format. But minor quibbles aside, this is the kind of book I’ll be recommending to every young pastor who thinks ‘I’ve got this’—only to burn out in two years. If you’re leading a church solo, this audiobook might just save your ministry. Or at least your sanity.
