I went into this audiobook thinking I knew what to expect from a Michael Connelly novel, but The Poet blew me away with its dark intensity and complex characters. Buck Schirner's narration is exceptional, effortlessly conveying Jack McEvoy's frustration and fear as he's drawn deeper into the investigation. The pacing is expertly handled, with Connelly expertly ratcheting up the tension to create a sense of breathless urgency. My only criticism is that some of the supporting characters felt a bit one-dimensional at times, but this is a minor quibble in an otherwise outstanding listen. Overall, I'd highly recommend The Poet to anyone looking for a gripping mystery with a compelling narrator.
