About This Audiobook

In this indispensable collection, Niccolò Machiavelli reveals the dark underbelly of statecraft, where cunning and deception are often the keys to survival. The Prince and The Art of War, two of his most celebrated works, are masterfully combined to create a singularly persuasive and unsettling guide to the exercise of power. This audiobook is a masterclass in strategic thinking, and its relevance to contemporary politics and international relations is undiminished by the centuries. Narrator Ben Ayers delivers a crisp, authoritative performance that perfectly captures the dry wit and analytical detachment of Machiavelli's writing. His measured tone brings an added layer of sophistication to the narrative, making this audiobook a compelling listen for anyone interested in politics, history, or philosophy.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

As I listened to The Prince & The Art of War, I found myself both fascinated and repelled by Machiavelli's ideas. Narrator Ben Ayers brings a sense of gravitas and authority to the narrative, which makes it impossible to ignore the book's central message: that power is often a dirty and ruthless business. What struck me, however, was the way in which Machiavelli's writing has aged so remarkably well. His observations on human nature, for example, are both profound and unsettling, and his advice on how to navigate the complexities of politics and warfare remains as relevant today as it was over 500 years ago. If I have any criticisms, it's that the audiobook could benefit from a more nuanced discussion of the ethical implications of Machiavelli's ideas. At times, the book feels like a straightforward endorsement of ruthless pragmatism, which doesn't entirely sit well with me. Still, this is a minor quibble in what is otherwise a masterful audiobook.
