Their dynamic feels refreshingly modern, even if the setting is Regency: Gwendoline isn’t “feisty” for the sake of it; she’s a woman who’s learned that kindness is a luxury she can’t afford. Rebecca De Leeuw’s performance elevates the material significantly. Her Gwendoline is *deliciously* waspish, but she never lets the character tip into caricature. The real standout, though, is how she handles Hugo. His voice isn’t just a low rumble; it’s layered with exhaustion, as if every polite phrase costs him. My only critique? The pacing drags slightly in the middle—Balogh spends a bit too long on Gwendoline’s internal debates about propriety, and a few scenes with secondary characters (looking at you, meddling aunt) feel like filler. And while the emotional payoff is earned, I wished for a touch more heat in the romance; their chemistry is electric in dialogue but oddly chaste in execution. Still, the audiobook’s production is flawless—no awkward edits or volume jumps—and the ending, when it comes, satisfies like a perfectly aged whiskey: warm, with a bite.
