About This Audiobook

Imagine *The Handmaid’s Tale* meets *Game of Thrones*—if Gilead were a frozen wasteland ruled by men who’ve rejected female dominance. That’s the brisk, blood-soaked premise of *The Protector*, a rom-com with teeth. Christina Sanders, a sharp-tongued historian, stumbles into a warzone when her fieldwork in the Men of the Northlands’ territory goes sideways. What starts as a dry academic expedition spirals into a desperate survival story where the only rule is ‘kill or be dominated.’ Peer’s worldbuilding is so vividly tactile—think leather armor that smells like pine tar, the guttural dialect of the Northmen, and a society where strength literally dictates worth—that you’ll forget you’re not skidding across ice in mittens. The romance isn’t just a subplot; it’s a slow-burn battle of wits and wills, with Christina’s feminist ideals clashing against a culture that views her as either a trophy or a traitor. And yes, the steam is dialed up when the power dynamics aren’t. No Reader’s Digest version here—this is a romance for people who’d rather debate ‘consent culture’ than compromise on a happy ending.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

Noelle Bridges and John Masterson deliver a narration duo that’s equal parts combustible and cozy, like a fire poker heated in a forge. Bridges narrates Christina’s POV with a no-nonsense academic’s precision, her voice threading through dry wit and barely contained rage at the Northmen’s misogyny. She makes Christina’s transformation from ‘disgruntled professor’ to ‘unlikely revolutionary’ feel earned, not campy. Masterson, meanwhile, chews through the Northmen’s dialogue with a gravelly, almost mythic gravitas—imagine if Sean Bean narrated a Viking romance while eating a steak, and you’re halfway there. The production is crisp, with just enough ambient wind howl to sell the isolation without drowning out the dialogue. My only nitpick? The Northmen’s slang occasionally clunks when Bridges tries to mimic Masterson’s rougher tones, pulling me out of scenes. And while the pacing never drags, the final act’s resolution feels a hair too tidy for a story that’s otherwise delightfully messy. Minor quibbles in a book that’s otherwise a riot of feminist firepower and sci-fi grit. If you’ve ever wanted to hear a heroine tell a hyper-masculine warlord where to shove his ‘claim,’ this is your audiobook.
