The Raging Storm

I’ll admit: I approached *The Raging Storm* with cautious optimism. The Two Rivers series has always been solid, but by Book 8, even the best series can risk formula. Not here. Cleeves upends expectations by making the storm itself—a literal tempest trapping suspects and investigators alike—a character in its own right. The claustrophobic tension is palpable, and the way the weather mirrors the emotional turmoil of the team (particularly Venn’s fraying marriage) is some of Cleeves’ most assured writing. That said, the subplot involving a secondary character’s backstory occasionally feels like a detour, slowing the momentum just when the main mystery should be tightening its grip. Jack Holden’s performance, though, is flawless. His Venn is a study in restraint: a man who’s learned to bury his emotions so deeply that when they surface, it’s devastating. The supporting cast gets equal care—listen for how he distinguishes the brittle defensiveness of a grieving mother versus the smarmy evasiveness of a local businessman. My only quibble? The audio mixing occasionally drowns out quieter lines during the storm scenes, forcing a replay. Still, it’s a minor gripe in an otherwise immersive production. What lingers isn’t the whodunit (though the twist is satisfyingly earned) but the haunting question Cleeves poses: *How well can you ever know the people you love?* For fans of Tana French’s psychological depth or Peter May’s atmospheric crimes, this is a must-listen—just maybe not during an actual thunderstorm.
