Ell Potter’s narration is a masterclass in restraint; she doesn’t overplay the drama, letting Maslen’s writing do the heavy lifting. Her Ballantyne is weary but razor-focused, and the way she voices the supporting cast—especially the slippery politicians and terrified sources—adds layers the text alone might miss. The production quality is flawless, with no distracting edits or volume inconsistencies, which is a relief in an era where too many audiobooks sound like they were recorded in a closet. The story’s strength lies in its realism. Maslen’s experience in journalism bleeds into the plot, making the media’s role in the conspiracy feel chillingly authentic. That said, the middle act drags slightly with procedural details that, while immersive, could’ve been tightened. And while Potter nails the British accents, a few secondary characters blur together in tone. But these are minor quibbles. The final act is a gut-punch, and the ending—ambiguous in the best way—lingers. If you love your thrillers smart, morally complex, and narrated with precision, this is a standout.
