I’ve listened to enough romances to know when a narrator can make or break the experience, and Erik Bloomquist is one of those rare performers who doesn’t just voice Perry Constantine—he inhabits him. Bloomquist nails the effortless charm that masks Perry’s ruthless ambition, his cadence dipping into smug arrogance one moment and raw vulnerability the next. Apple Young, voicing Violet, delivers a masterclass in transformation—her initial meek tones morph into a voice that could freeze fire as she realizes Perry’s games. Production-wise, the team behind the mic deserves a standing ovation; the sound design subtly shifts from sterile wealth (think penthouse elevator music) to dangerous intimacy (a door slamming shut, a glass shattering mid-sentence) without ever overpowering the voices. My biggest critique? The side characters often feel like mannequins in a department store window—pretty and expensive, but lacking dimension. And while the dual-narrator format works seamlessly, I found myself wishing Bloomquist had handled more of Violet’s internal monologues; Young’s performance is brilliant, but there were moments I craved Perry’s snide commentary on Violet’s thoughts in the first person. Still, the pacing is relentless, and that final confrontation? Delivered with such coiled tension I had to pause the audiobook just to breathe.
