Sarah Lambie’s narration is the frosting on this Gothic cake—a performance that’s equal parts honeyed charm and icy unease. She nails Adeline’s vulnerability without veering into melodrama, her voice trembling just enough to sell the character’s terror without resorting to histrionics. The real magic, though, is in how Lambie handles the novel’s pacing. Radcliffe’s story unfolds like a series of half-opened doors, and Lambie lingers on the hinges, letting the silence between scenes breathe. That said, there were moments where the slow burn felt like a slog—especially in the middle act, where Radcliffe’s knack for meandering descriptions occasionally clashes with modern expectations for momentum. Still, the payoff is worth it when the house of secrets finally collapses around Adeline. The only outright misstep is the production’s occasional overuse of subtle audio cues (a distant door creak here, a branch snap there), which can feel a tad heavy-handed in an era where subtlety is often prized. But these are minor quibbles in a performance that otherwise feels tailor-made for the material. If you love your Gothic with a side of psychological tension and a narrator who can sell both sighs and shivers, this is a listen worth committing to.
