I went into *The Savage* expecting your typical enemies-to-lovers trope, but Romero shreds that formula to pieces. The early chapters are a masterclass in awkward tension—our heroine is so furious at the man who saved her that she can barely form a coherent sentence when he’s near. It’s infuriating, yes, but also weirdly compelling. By the midpoint, I found myself yelling at my headphones, not because the story was bad, but because Romero had me *invested*. The villainous undertones in their relationship were handled with a scalpel’s precision; no melodrama, just the creeping dread of realizing you’re falling for someone who might ruin you. Narration-wise, this audiobook is a two-headed beast. Master’s performance as the female lead is all sharp edges and wounded pride—every sigh feels like a weapon. Perez, as her tormentor/savior, leans into a voice that sounds like it could growl you into submission, which, admittedly, works a little *too* well. The only misstep is the final confrontation: the emotional peak felt rushed, like the production team couldn’t quite decide if they wanted a whisper or a scream. Still, the sheer audacity of this story—and its refusal to play nice—makes it impossible to pause once it starts. If you want romance that feels like a slap in the face, this delivers.
