I went into *The Scarlet Alchemist* expecting another YA fantasy about a scrappy heroine outsmarting the system, but Baker delivers something grittier and far more compelling. Zilan isn’t just ambitious; she’s ruthless, and her moral compromises feel painfully real. The alchemy isn’t just a metaphor here—it’s a metaphor *with teeth*, and the way Baker ties it to Wenxing’s stratified society adds layers of complexity that most fantasy novels skip entirely. Fatima Romina Ali’s performance is the secret weapon. She nails Zilan’s sharp wit and underlying fragility, but where she truly shines is in the side characters: the smug nobles, the desperate street kids, and the eerie, almost otherworldly Royal Alchemists. The pacing, however, stumbles in the middle—some transitions drag, making the second act feel like a slog through molasses. And while the ending wraps up the plot, the world’s moral ambiguities deserve more closure. That said, the production is pristine, with crisp audio that makes even the densest alchemical jargon feel immersive. If you crave fantasy that punches harder than it preaches, this is your elixir.
