About This Audiobook

Dive into a treasure chest of 28 Scottish fairy tales, where selkies shed their skins, kelpies drag riders to watery graves, and brownies outsmart greedy farmers. Grierson’s 1908 collection isn’t your average bedtime fodder—it’s a raw, unfiltered glimpse into a world where morals are as slippery as the lochs themselves. These aren’t sanitized Disney versions; expect tales where justice is swift, kindness is tested, and curses linger long after the last word. The language crackles with the rhythm of old dialects, making it a linguistic adventure as much as a narrative one. Whether you’re a history buff, a folklore fanatic, or just looking for stories to send shivers down the spines of young listeners, this anthology delivers the goods with grit and charm.

The real magic here is Steven Cree’s narration—a performance so immersive it feels less like listening and more like being pulled into a fireside chat with a master storyteller. His voice, fluid and expressive, shifts effortlessly between gnarled crones, brash young heroes, and eerie supernatural beings, each character rendered with just the right edge of mischief or menace. The pacing is brisk, ensuring the collection never drags, and the production quality is crisp, letting every whisper of the wind through the Highlands and every creak of the old barnyard door come through loud and clear.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

Steven Cree’s narration is the star of this audiobook, hands down. He’s got that rare ability to make even the most archaic Scottish turns of phrase feel alive, his voice rising and falling like the tides of a stormy sea. I particularly loved his rendition of “The Tale of Tam Lin,” where his vocal agility turned the harrowing climax into something genuinely pulse-quickening. The way he modulates between the eerie calm of a brownie’s whisper and the thunderous rage of a scorned kelpie is nothing short of masterful—it’s the kind of performance that makes you want to hit rewind just to hear it all over again. That said, the collection isn’t without its quirks. A handful of stories, like “The King of the Cats,” feel a bit too abrupt, as if the tape ran out mid-sentence. It’s a minor gripe, but it does knock the wind out of the story’s momentum at moments. And while the production is otherwise top-notch, a few of the tracks could benefit from a touch more dynamic range—the louder exclamations sometimes swallow the quieter, atmospheric moments. Still, these are small criticisms in an otherwise stellar listen. If you’re after fairy tales with bite, stories that linger like the mist on a Highland morning, this is your audiobook.
