I love an unreliable narrator, but Helward Mann takes the concept to another level—he’s not just biased, he’s *systematically misled* in a way that makes the reader complicit in the city’s delusion. Priest forces you to sit with the discomfort of a protagonist who’s both brilliant and deeply flawed, and that tension is where the book shines. Steven Cree’s performance amplifies this perfectly: his voice is smooth but never soothing, carrying the weight of Helward’s dogma with a quiet intensity that cracks just enough to let the cracks in the world show through. The production is crisp, with minimal distractions, which is good because the story’s power lies in its unrelenting focus on atmosphere over spectacle. If I have one critique, it’s that the middle act drags slightly—Priest’s worldbuilding is so meticulous that the pacing stalls in spots, and the third act’s payoff, while satisfying, feels a little too neat for a story that’s spent 9 hours undermining neat resolutions. Still, the ending lingers like a bad dream you can’t shake, and that’s a mark of real storytelling. If you crave sci-fi that challenges your perception of reality without resorting to flashy tech or space operas, this is your ticket.
