The Serpent and the Wolf

I’ll admit, I was skeptical when a romantasy leaned this hard into the “enemies-to-lovers” trope—I’ve heard the ‘you’re my worst enemy/I’m obsessed with you’ spiel enough to roll my eyes into next week. But Robinson and Vilinsky made it work, and that’s due in no small part to Vilinsky’s narration. His Prince Dain isn’t the usual brooding pretty-boy archetype; he’s slippery, almost serpentine in his delivery, with a cadence that makes every line feel like a threat wrapped in a compliment. Vaasa, meanwhile, is all fire and frost from the jump, and Vilinsky nails the contrast between her biting sarcasm and the vulnerability she can’t afford to show. The pacing is relentless, though I’ll confess to a few moments where the political maneuvering dragged just enough to make me check the time. Robinson’s worldbuilding shines here, but the magic system occasionally feels like it’s missing a ‘how’—it’s more thematic than mechanical, which left me wanting a little more substance in the spells and sigils. Still, the audiobook production is top-tier: Vilinsky’s performance is matched by crisp sound design that never overpowers the voice work, and the dual POV structure never feels muddled. If you’re hunting for a romantasy that doesn’t just tolerate tension but demands it, this one’s a bite worth taking.
