About This Audiobook

Michael Rudd’s *The Serpent Queen* doesn’t just creep under your skin—it coils around it and never lets go. This isn’t your average teen horror flick with jump scares and one-dimensional villains; it’s a slow-burn nightmare where the real terror isn’t just the creatures lurking in the woods, but the decisions the characters make (or fail to make) as the noose tightens. Rudd crafts a story where paranoia is the deadliest predator, and the line between hunter and prey blurs until there’s no telling which you’re listening to. The prose is lean but vivid, squeezing maximum dread from sparse descriptions—a lone tent zipper stuck, the sound of breathing that isn’t yours. It’s horror stripped to its bones, and it lingers long after the last hiss fades into silence.

Katelyn Van Gool’s narration is the engine that drives this nightmare home. Her voice shifts with eerie precision, swinging from exhausted calm to breathless panic in a heartbeat. She nails the subtext—every hesitation, every forced laugh—feeling less like a performer and more like a survivor whispering warnings directly into your ears. The production is crisp, ensuring every rustle in the undergrowth or distant chatter sounds like it’s happening in the room with you. If you’ve ever wanted to feel like you’re being hunted while comfortably seated in an armchair, this is the audiobook that’ll do it.

AudioBook Atlas

I approached *The Serpent Queen* expecting a YA thriller with a gimmick, but Rudd’s story surprised me by ditching tired tropes for something far more unsettling. The Serpent Queen herself isn’t a mustache-twirling villain; she’s a force of nature, a predator whose presence is felt as much in what’s not said as in the hisses that punctuate the narration. My favorite moment? The team’s debate over whether to burn their supplies to create a signal fire, which somehow manages to be both mundane and apocalyptic. It’s those small, human moments—exhausted jokes, half-hearted plans—that make the horror hit harder when reality snaps back into focus. Van Gool’s performance is a masterclass in tonal control. She makes the research team feel like real people, not just archetypes, which makes their downfall sting. My only quibble is that certain character voices blend together in the early going, making it harder to track who’s speaking during the first act’s chatter. And while the ending is thematically satisfying, I wished Rudd had leaned harder into the ambiguity—left the listener chewing on possibilities rather than spelling out the Queen’s origins. Still, if you want an audiobook that’ll make you paranoid about your next camping trip (or even next walk in the park), this is it. I finished it in one sitting, and I’d bet you will too.
