Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit: I approached *The Silver Moon* with skepticism. Celebrity memoirs about mortality often drown in self-importance or cliché. But Courtenay—ever the contrarian—flips the script. This isn’t a tearful goodbye; it’s a defiant chuckle in the face of the void. Bower’s narration is the secret weapon here. His voice, weathered but precise, carries the weight of Courtenay’s words without ever tipping into melodrama. When the author describes his body’s betrayal, Bower’s delivery is clinical, almost amused, as if sharing a dark joke over whiskey. It’s jarring in the best way. The structure is deceptively simple: vignettes stitching together past and present, fame and obscurity, arrogance and humility. Some moments soar—the passage about his father’s watch had me paused, staring out a window—but others feel *too* brief. Courtenay’s dismissal of his own novels as ‘just stories’ rings false (even for a man facing death, that’s coy), and the abrupt ending left me wanting one last, unfiltered thought. Still, the production is flawless: no distracting edits, no saccharine music, just Bower’s voice and Courtenay’s words, raw and unvarnished. If you’ve ever loved someone who faced their end with clear eyes and a smirk, this will gut you. If you haven’t, it might teach you how.
