Kasey Logan’s narration is the secret weapon of *The Thanksgiving Dinner*, a performance that feels less like reading and more like eavesdropping on a family’s most private crisis. She nails the Texas drawl of Jolene’s family without slipping into caricature, and her handling of Bennie—whose lines are simple, almost childlike—is nothing short of masterful. You can hear the love in her voice when Jolene speaks to him, but also the exhaustion, the frustration, the love tangled with impatience. The pacing is deliberate, which works for the story’s reflective tone, though I wished some of the middle scenes (particularly the buildup to the titular dinner) had a bit more urgency to mirror Jolene’s simmering dread. Where the audiobook stumbles is in its supporting cast. The fiancé, Daniel, feels like a plot device more than a person—his objections to Bennie aren’t explored deeply enough to feel earned, just stated. And while Maxfield’s themes of sacrifice and self-worth resonate, the secondary characters (Jolene’s parents, her best friend) often feel like cardboard cutouts, their roles serving the plot rather than adding texture. Still, these flaws don’t derail Logan’s performance or the story’s emotional core. By the time you reach the climactic dinner table confrontation—rendered with such raw, spoken-word intimacy that you’ll feel like you’re holding your breath—you’ll forget those missteps. It’s a story about the families we’re born into and the ones we choose, and Logan’s narration makes sure you *feel* every impossible choice Jolene has to make.
