Too often, these stories lean on overused tropes—noble lovers separated by war, a conveniently noble aristocrat, and enough rose-tinted melancholy to blind you. Shapiro, thankfully, refuses the easy path. Instead, she crafts a story where love is a battlefield of its own, where sacrifice isn’t poetic but messy, where the “ties that bind” often feel like shackles. The Whitfields’ privilege is a cage, not a crown, and Shapiro doesn’t let the reader forget it. My only critique? The middle act drags slightly, weighed down by historical exposition. It’s forgivable—history here is character—but it occasionally stalls the emotional momentum. Fiona Small, though? She’s a revelation. Her voicing of Evelyn Whitfield, the stubborn, flawed matriarch, is so precise I could hear the whiskey in her laugh across a crowded room. The way she modulates between the clipped enunciation of upper-class English and the guttural urgency of Yiddish phrases in dialogue is masterclass. My one nitpick: at times, her pacing in quieter, reflective scenes risks feeling slightly rushed, as if she’s eager to return to the drama. But these are minor complaints in a performance that otherwise feels like a masterclass in audiobook narration. By the final act, when the past and present collide in a gut-punch of a revelation, I was utterly hooked—proof that Shapiro and Small have created something far more than just another historical romance.
