David Case’s performance is the linchpin of this audiobook’s success—his baritone carries the weight of history with a warmth that keeps even the most esoteric financial discussions digestible. He nails the balance between gravitas and humor, whether delivering the clipped diction of a British lord or the earthy curses of a French soldier, making the tontine’s mechanics feel as personal as they are political. The pacing, however, is a double-edged sword; the novel’s early sections drag slightly as Costain lays the groundwork, but the payoff is worth it once the drama ramps up in the latter half. A standout moment is Case’s rendition of the Battle of Waterloo scenes, where his voice crackles with tension as the tontine’s beneficiaries face literal and figurative gunfire. That said, the production occasionally suffers from a tinny quality in quieter passages, and the dense cast of minor characters can blur together without stronger vocal distinctions.
