About This Audiobook

T.J. Brown's 'The Unhappy Medium' is a gripping, atmospheric horror novel that breathes new life into the ghost story genre. Dr. Newton Barlow, a cool, rational scientist, is an unlikely protagonist for a tale of the supernatural, but it's this very contrast that makes the story so compelling. Barlow's skepticism lends a refreshing dose of reality to the proceedings, as he's dragged into a world of séances, spirits, and eerie occurrences. Marston York's narration is a standout feature, bringing Barlow's dry wit and disbelief to life with a perfect balance of skepticism and unease. This isn't your typical jump-scare horror; it's a slow burn that keeps you guessing until the very end.

Editor's Review ★★★★

AudioBook Atlas

As a fan of both classic ghost stories and modern, cerebral horror, 'The Unhappy Medium' was a delightful surprise. Marston York's narration is exceptional, capturing the dry wit and skepticism of Dr. Barlow with such nuance that you'd think he was born to play this role. The pacing is excellent, building tension and unease slowly but surely, until you're left on the edge of your seat, wondering what's real and what's not. I particularly enjoyed how Brown uses Barlow's scientific background to explore the nature of reality and perception. However, I did find some of the supporting characters a bit one-dimensional, and the resolution felt a tad rushed. But these are minor quibbles in an otherwise outstanding audiobook. If you're looking for a chilling, thought-provoking horror story that will keep you up at night, look no further.
