I’ll admit, I side-eyed the 12-hour runtime at first—*The Warlord* isn’t short, and neither is its setup. But Showalter earns every minute by making the worldbuilding feel organic, not like a lore dump. The first act takes its time establishing the warlords’ cursed dynamics and Taliyah’s place in their chaos, and while the pacing occasionally drags in the middle (a 40-minute stretch of political maneuvering could’ve been tighter), the payoff is worth it. The real magic? The way the romance unfolds *alongside* the action, not in spite of it. Too many paranormal romances relegate the plot to a B-story; here, the battles and the slow-burn tension between Taliyah and the warlord are inextricably linked, and Bellmore’s narration sells that duality perfectly. His growl when the warlord’s rage surfaces? *Chef’s kiss.* His delivery of Taliyah’s sarcastic comebacks? Even better. My two critiques: First, the sound mixing occasionally muffles the softer dialogue—nothing ruinous, but I found myself rewinding a few lines when Taliyah’s whispers got lost under the score. Second, the villain’s motivations feel a tad undercooked compared to the rich backstories of the main cast. But these are quibbles. What *The Warlord* does right—*brutally* right—is balance ferocity with vulnerability. The sex scenes sizzle without feeling gratuitous, the fight choreography is vivid enough to visualize, and the emotional beats (especially Taliyah’s struggle with trust) hit harder because Bellmore never lets them tip into melodrama. If you love your romance with a side of bloodshed and a narrator who can make ‘I’ll ruin you’ sound like a promise *and* a threat, this is your next obsession.
