Cardinale, meanwhile, nails Raina’s emotional whiplash—one moment she’s a grieving sister, the next a hurricane of raw power. The chemistry between them isn’t just complementary; it’s symbiotic. That said, the story stumbles when it leans too hard into its romance subplot. The slow-burn attraction between Raina and a brooding, immortal antagonist is compelling, but the payoff feels rushed, like the author got tired of making us wait and yanked the thread too soon. And while I adore the audiobook’s production—those subtle wind sounds during outdoor scenes, the way the voices seem to echo in cavernous halls—there’s one jarring misstep: a mid-book chapter break where the narration glitches into a jarring, unnatural silence for half a second. It’s like a record scratch in an otherwise flawless performance. Still, this is a rare audiobook where the narration isn’t just background noise—it’s the whole damn show. If you want fantasy that feels like a fever dream you can’t wake up from, this is your frostbite.
