The killer’s victims aren’t just plot devices; Pressley gives each their own haunting presence, even in flashbacks. That said, her pacing in the first act feels *just* a hair too deliberate—like she’s holding back when the text could afford more urgency. Still, once the investigation ties into Bentley’s family history, the performance snaps into focus, and the last third of the book is a masterclass in audio suspense. Omer’s real strength here is his refusal to let the supernatural creep in, even when the crimes suggest it. The blood-drinking angle could’ve veered into cheap shock value, but he grounds it in forensic realism and psychological trauma. The reveal of the killer’s identity is less about a twist and more about the slow, sickening click of pieces falling into place—something I appreciated far more than the usual last-minute bombshells. My one critique? The subplot involving Bentley’s sister occasionally feels like it’s competing with the main case, pulling focus when the central mystery is already compelling enough to carry the weight.
