About This Audiobook

Things I’ll Never Say isn’t just another short story collection—it’s a confessional booth for the teenage soul, staffed by some of YA’s most fearless writers. Each story peels back layers of silence, tackling secrets too sharp for polite conversation: identity, shame, desire, betrayal. What could feel like a series of loosely connected vignettes instead coheres into a resonant chorus of voices that are by turns wry, wounded, and wise. These aren’t tidy tales with bow-tied morals; they’re messy, urgent, and often uncomfortably honest—exactly what today’s young readers deserve. The audiobook elevates the experience with a quartet of narrators—Bahni Turpin, Anne Flosnik, Amy Rubinate, and Luke Daniels—each bringing a distinct tonal precision that honors the individuality of the authors’ voices. Turpin’s narration smolders with quiet intensity in her segments, while Rubinate captures adolescent vulnerability with uncanny accuracy. The production avoids over-stylization, letting the raw power of the writing and performances take center stage. For listeners craving authenticity over escapism, this audiobook doesn’t just speak to the teenage experience—it leans in and whispers the parts no one else dares.

Editor's Review

AudioBook Atlas

From the first story, I was hooked—not by plot twists, but by the sheer courage in the writing. Bahni Turpin’s narration of a trans teen’s letter to his estranged father hit me like a punch to the chest. Her restraint made the emotion hit harder. Anne Flosnik brings a wry, almost sardonic edge to a story about academic pressure that kept me both laughing and cringing. That balance of tone is where this audiobook shines: it never lectures, but it also never flinches. That said, a couple of transitions between stories feel abrupt, and Luke Daniels, while solid, sometimes underplays the emotional stakes in more introspective pieces. The pacing lags slightly in the middle third, where a cluster of quieter stories blur together. But these are minor flaws in an otherwise exceptional production. Amy Rubinate’s performance of a girl hiding her family’s poverty is so nuanced I had to pause and collect myself. The fact that each story is standalone makes this perfect for listening in chunks, but I ended up binging it in two days. This isn’t light listening—it’s necessary listening.
