Through Waters Unseen

I’ll admit, I approached *Through Waters Unseen* skeptical of yet another Bermuda Triangle tale, but Clark’s take is refreshingly *weird*—less about disappearances and more about what *stays behind*. The story follows a marine biologist (whose name I won’t spoil, because the slow reveal of his past is one of the book’s strengths) as he uncovers an island’s rotten core. The horror isn’t in the monsters—though there *are* monsters—but in the way the island *adapts* to outsiders, twisting their perceptions until they can’t trust their own eyes. The middle act sags slightly with repetitive ‘is-this-real?’ moments, but the payoff in the final hour is worth it, especially when Good’s narration drops to a whisper and you realize the *water* has been listening the whole time. Good’s performance is masterclass restraint. He doesn’t do ‘voices’ so much as *textures*—the islanders sound like they’ve been smoked by the sun, the protagonist’s internal monologue carries the weight of a man who’s already half-lost. My only gripe? The audio mixing occasionally buries the quieter lines under ambient noise (a risk with atmospheric production), and the female characters’ dialogue sometimes feels stiff compared to the men’s. But these are quibbles. If you love horror that’s more *existential dread* than splatter, or if you’ve ever stared at the ocean and felt it stare back, this one’s for you. Just don’t listen to it on a boat.
