I went into 'Todeszeiten' expecting a fast-paced assassin thriller, but what I got was something more deliberate—and honestly, more interesting. Volker Wolf’s performance is a masterclass in understatement. He doesn’t shout or dramatize; instead, he lets the tension build through subtle vocal control, making Frank Becker feel chillingly real. The way he delivers internal monologues—with just a slight tightening of tone—adds layers to a character who could’ve easily been one-dimensional. The production is crisp, with clean audio and no distractions, which is essential given how much hinges on silence and implication. That said, the story’s brevity works both for and against it. While I appreciated not being dragged through unnecessary subplots, the resolution felt slightly rushed. A few more beats in the final confrontation could’ve elevated the emotional payoff. Also, while Baldacci sets up intriguing questions about Becker’s past, they’re barely touched on—more setup than payoff. Still, as a compact character study wrapped in a suspense narrative, this audiobook delivers. It’s not explosive, but it lingers. Perfect for a single intense listen during a late-night drive or a quiet evening when you want something sharp, focused, and morally gray.
