About This Audiobook

True Crime by Mike Vendossa doesn’t just recount the Jack Unterweger case—it dissects it like a forensic surgeon, laying bare the grotesque vanity of a man who counted criminals and celebrities among his devotees. What makes this audiobook gripping isn’t just the facts (though they’re devastating), but Vendossa’s razor-sharp focus on the cultural mythmaking that transformed a convicted murderer into a folk antihero. From the neon-lit Vienna of the 1980s to the backrooms of LA’s literary scene, every chapter drips with the sort of detail that makes you question which parts of the story were scripted by Unterweger himself. The pacing is relentless, but it’s the narrative precision that lingers: this isn’t true crime as shock value, but as a cautionary tale about the stories we choose to believe.

Narrator Nils Renschler deserves a spotlight of his own. His voice is the audiobook’s most chilling instrument—a measured, almost hypnotic baritone that lulls you into complacency before delivering lines so cruel they feel like physical blows. Renschler nails the tonal shifts, whether channeling Unterweger’s unnervingly charming facade or the cold fury of investigators who saw through the act too late. The production amplifies this effect, with subtle sound design that isolates key moments (a creaking prison door, the rasp of a typewriter) without ever resorting to gimmicky effects. If you think you’ve heard the Unterweger story before, Vendossa’s version will make you doubt it.

AudioBook Atlas

I went into this audiobook expecting another salacious true-crime hit, and came out genuinely unsettled by how well it weaponizes restraint. Renschler’s narration is the secret sauce—his cadence is so controlled that when Unterweger’s monstrosity seeps through, it lands like a sucker punch. The first time he delivered a line about Unterweger chatting up victims while casually referencing Nietzsche, I had to pause and stare at the wall. That’s not the kind of detail you’ll find in most true crime; Vendossa is clearly mining archives and old interviews, not just recycling press clippings. That said, the book isn’t flawless. The middle act drags slightly in its reconstruction of Unterweger’s European literary tour—fascinating for some, but easy to zone out on during a commute. And while Renschler’s performance is stellar, I wish the production had leaned harder into the period atmosphere; a few more ambient echoes in the Vienna sections would’ve deepened the immersion. Still, these are minor quibbles. This isn’t just a true crime listen—it’s a masterclass in how to turn a lurid headline into a haunting meditation on evil. Listen at your own risk: you’ll never trust a charming murderer again.
