Michael Goodrick’s narration is the secret weapon of this audiobook, and it’s impossible not to appreciate his skill. He doesn’t waste time on flourishes; instead, he lets the horror speak for itself, modulating his voice just enough to distinguish between victims, killers, and the people left to pick up the pieces. His tone in the Florida serial killer case is particularly masterful—cool, almost clinical when describing the murders, then suddenly suffused with dread during the investigator’s chilling admission that ‘he didn’t see it coming.’ That’s the genius of this collection: it doesn’t need to scream to terrify. That said, a few minor critiques keep it from being flawless. The production quality dips just slightly in the nurse’s case, with a faint echo that makes the hospital setting feel less claustrophobic than it should. And while Moore’s research is impressive, the Nevada case about a seemingly ordinary man’s descent into violence feels a bit rushed compared to the others, leaving you wanting more texture. Still, these are nitpicks in an otherwise gripping listen. Goodrick’s performance alone makes this worth your time, but the stories themselves—the way they burrow into your brain and refuse to let go—are what make True Crime Storytime Volume 7 a standout.
