George Newbern’s narration is the standout here, transforming what could’ve been a dry legal thriller into something gripping. He nails the protagonist’s internal conflict—his exhaustion, his flashes of brilliance, and his moments of sheer desperation—as if he’s lived these scenes himself. The way he modulates between the lawyer’s clipped, overworked tones during interrogations and the raw, exhausted silence after a setback adds layers to the audiobook that the text alone couldn’t convey. Credit also to the production team for seamless editing; even in the densest courtroom scenes, the audio never feels cluttered. That said, the story isn’t without its frustrations. The billionaire’s family is so cartoonishly evil—think monogrammed handkerchiefs and passive-aggressive smiles—that their villainy occasionally pulls the reader out of the realism Stagg otherwise strives for. And while the central mystery is clever, the resolution hinges on a few too-convenient reveals that feel like contrivances rather than earned payoffs. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise propulsive listen. True Intent thrives on its atmosphere of relentless pressure, where every alliance is transactional and every victory feels temporary. If you love thrillers where the system is the antagonist and the protagonist is just trying to survive it, this one’s a knockout—especially in audio.
