I started listening while folding laundry and ended up ignoring two loads because Elizabeth Russell’s narration seduced me into full immersion. Her voice flips effortlessly between Annika’s pragmatic frustration and Banks’s smoldering alpha charm, landing every snarky aside like a verbal karate chop. Nick J. Russo handles Banks’s male characters with a growly, impatient timbre that’s equal parts protective and exasperated—think Thor but with a mortgage and zero hammer-wielding scenes. The pacing is brisk enough to keep the supernatural shenanigans from dragging, though the middle act could use a tighter editor’s scalpel; a couple of spirit side-quests meander longer than the haunted hallway deserves. The production sparkles: subtle audio cues signal when Annika crosses the property line into territory that’s actively trying to kill her, and the silence between sentences is so crisp it feels like the house itself is holding its breath. My only real quibble? Banks’s backstory drips out in dribs and drabs like a leaky faucet—we get the broad strokes fast enough, but the emotional plumbing needs a little more wrench time. Would I listen again? Only if the laundry pile cooperates—and even then, I’m not promising.
