I went into *Twisted Pawn* expecting a steamy mob romance with a side of angst, but L.J. Shen delivered something far more compelling—a story where love is the most dangerous weapon in the room. Achilles Ferrante isn’t your typical brooding alpha; he’s a man who’s spent his life believing he’s untouchable, and Tierney James, with her razor-sharp wit and stubborn streak, is the first person to make him question everything. The push-and-pull between them is electric, but it’s the supporting cast that truly sells it. The secondary characters aren’t just window dressing—they’re fully realized threats and allies, each with their own agendas that keep the plot twisting. The narration is a standout. Dexter’s Achilles is a masterclass in aristocratic villainy—you’ll both hate and root for him, sometimes in the same sentence. Rivers’ Tierney is a revelation, balancing vulnerability and steel in a way that makes her feel like a real person, not just a plot device. That said, the pacing drags slightly in the middle act, and by the climax, I found myself wishing for a bit more restraint in the steamier scenes—they occasionally veer into over-the-top territory. But these are minor quibbles. By the final act, I was fully invested, and the gut-punch ending left me breathless.
