But *Two-Minute Drill* surprised me by making Scott—the klutzy, chess-club new kid—just as compelling as Chris, the quarterback everyone idolizes. Lupica doesn’t just flip the script; he rewrites it entirely, forcing these two opposites into a partnership that feels earned, not contrived. The football scenes are vivid (you’ll *hear* the cleats in the dirt), but the real game is the psychological push-and-pull between Chris’s entitlement and Scott’s quiet resilience. Danny Gerard’s performance sells it. He doesn’t overdo the jock vs. nerd stereotypes; instead, he finds the cracks in both characters—Chris’s flicker of self-doubt, Scott’s buried frustration. My only gripe? The ending wraps up *too* neatly, as if Lupica didn’t trust his young audience to sit with ambiguity. And while the production is clean, a few more ambient sounds (crowd noise, locker-room echoes) could’ve deepened the immersion. Still, for a sub-three-hour listen, it’s a masterclass in economy: every scene serves the central question of what happens when the guy who’s always had the ball has to pass it to someone else.
