Uglies [Uglies]

I’ll admit, I approached *Uglies* skeptical of yet another ‘teen saves the world’ dystopia, but Westerfeld’s novel hooked me within minutes—largely thanks to Ainhoa Maiquez’s narration. She nails Tally’s voice: a mix of snark, vulnerability, and the kind of stubbornness that makes you want to shake her and high-five her in the same breath. The real triumph, though, is how Maiquez handles the secondary characters. Shay’s breezy confidence feels like a mask (because it is), while the Smokies’ rough-edged camaraderie avoids the trap of sounding like a bunch of adults playing at rebellion. The production team deserves credit, too—subtle audio cues, like the hum of hoverboards or the distant chatter of Pretty parties, immerse you without ever feeling gimmicky. That said, the pacing isn’t perfect. The middle act drags slightly as Tally oscillates between allegiance to her friends and her own desires, and Westerfeld’s tendency to info-dump about the world’s history (via clunky dialogue) occasionally pulls you out of the moment. But these are minor quibbles in an otherwise gripping listen. What stays with you isn’t the action—though the hoverboard escapes are *electric*—but the questions it leaves lingering: Is rebellion just another form of conformity? Would you rather be happy and hollow or free and afraid? Maiquez sells every beat of that ambiguity, making this audiobook feel less like a story and more like a conversation you’re eavesdropping on—one that’s equal parts thrilling and unsettling.
