Colrain’s twist—centering a combat medic in a genocide-driven war—forces you to squirm as Ritchie’s skills save enemy lives, undermining the very mission he’s sworn to. The Valkyrie Corps arc feels like a fresh take on the ‘elite squad’ trope, mostly because Ritchie’s reluctance makes every victory feel pyrrhic. Moore’s narration sells it; his pacing is deliberate, almost surgical, but he *snaps* into urgency during firefights, making the audiobook feel cinematic without overacting. That said, the middle act drags slightly with political maneuvering that, while necessary, lacks the punch of the frontline scenes. And while the alien culture remains intriguingly opaque, I wished for more than just ‘hive mind’ shorthand—Colrain’s worldbuilding stumbles when it skims the *why* behind the war. Still, the final act’s moral gut-punch (no spoilers) lingers long after the credits. If you’re burned out on jingoistic space marines but crave military sci-fi with a conscience, this is your fix.
