I’ll admit, I approached *Valorous* with skepticism. Christian historical fiction can often tip into either sanctimonious preaching or costume-drama fluff, but Leigh avoids both traps. The Wulfriths are a family you *believe*—flawed, fierce, and occasionally foolish. The novel’s strength lies in its contradictions: a war story where the most gripping conflicts are internal, a faith-driven tale that doesn’t shy from the moral gray of survival. Take Sir Baird Wulfrith, for instance—a man whose loyalty to king and God is tested when the two demands diverge. His arc isn’t about choosing between right and wrong, but between two rights, and Draper’s narration sells that tension. His voice cracks just slightly during Baird’s prayers, as if the words cost him something. It’s a subtle touch, but it makes the character’s faith feel lived-in, not lectured. That said, the audiobook isn’t without stumbles. The first act drags a bit under the weight of political setup—Leigh’s worldbuilding is meticulous, but listeners craving immediate action might grow restless. And while Draper’s French accents for minor characters are serviceable, they occasionally veer into caricature, pulling me out of the moment. Still, the payoff arrives in the second half, where a siege sequence (recorded with immersive sound design—listen for the distant clang of swords and the murmur of Latin prayers) had me pausing to rewind. This isn’t a book that sugarcoats; it’s for listeners who want their historical fiction with dirt under its nails and a prayer on its lips.
