Victim in the Violets

As a long-time cozy mystery devotee, I’m always skeptical of series that promise both charm and intrigue, but *Victim in the Violets* exceeded my expectations. Mandy Kaplan’s narration is the beating heart of this audiobook. She brings Doreen’s dry wit and Nan’s no-nonsense attitude to life with ease, but where she really shines is in the smaller roles. The way she voices Mack’s brother, for example, had me chuckling aloud—his exasperation was so palpable I could practically see his eye-roll. The pacing is another win; Mayer doesn’t linger too long on backstory, yet the world-building feels rich and lived-in. The mystery itself is cleverly constructed, with red herrings that actually mislead (a rarity in cozies!) and a resolution that feels earned, not rushed. That said, I’ll admit the estranged husband subplot occasionally feels like a narrative detour rather than a core conflict. It’s resolved a bit too neatly for my taste, and I would’ve loved more friction there to mirror the mystery’s depth. Additionally, the audio production occasionally swells with background music during quieter moments, which can muffle Kaplan’s delivery slightly. But these are minor quibbles in an otherwise thoroughly enjoyable listen. If you’re craving a mystery that’s as much about the characters as the case, this is your next obsession—just don’t be surprised if you start craving violets afterward.
