CC Kline’s narration is the secret weapon of this audiobook. She nails the protagonist’s sharp, no-nonsense detective edge—her voice drips with skepticism and resilience, making every line feel earned. But where Kline truly shines is in her portrayal of the Viking alpha. His gruff, guttural speech is delivered with a growl that lingers, and when he shifts into moments of raw vulnerability, Kline’s voice softens just enough to make it feel intimate, not saccharine. The production quality is crisp, with seamless transitions between the modern world and the ancient one, making the portal jump feel disorienting in the best way. If there’s a critique, it’s that the modern-day protagonist’s internal monologue can occasionally feel a tad repetitive—we get it, she’s capable, but by the third chapter, her ‘I’m a badass PI’ mantra starts to wear. That said, the payoff is worth it. The chemistry between the leads is electric, and the tension doesn’t let up until the final pages. The pacing is tight, though the second act drags slightly as the world-building expands. Still, by the time you reach the climax, you’ll be gripping your phone (or steering wheel, depending on your listening habits) as the stakes skyrocket.
