Barker’s writing doesn’t flinch from the darkness of the era (the opening capture scene is *brutal*), yet she threads in moments of surprising tenderness, like a warrior hesitating before claiming his bride’s hand. The audiobook’s length is both its strength and its weakness: the pacing is relentless, with no fat to trim, but I found myself wishing for just 10 more minutes to marinate in the aftermath of the climax (no pun intended). Emma Parry’s performance is a masterclass in tonal contrast. She growls out the Viking men’s lines with a gravelly edge that makes you believe they’ve just stepped off a longship, then softens into vulnerability for the women’s perspectives. My only critique? The production occasionally suffers from uneven audio levels—some whispered lines get lost if you’re listening in a noisy space. Still, the chemistry between the leads crackles, and the final scene (a wedding night that’s equal parts negotiation and seduction) is worth the price of admission alone. This isn’t a romance for the faint of heart, but if you like your love stories with a side of axe-wielding intensity, it’s a damn good ride.
