This is military sci-fi with the volume cranked to eleven—where the “heroes” are a platoon of warrant officers who seem to have collectively mainlined caffeine and black-market cyberware. The plot kicks off with an invasion that’s less *D-Day* and more *D-Day if everyone had jetpacks and a grudge*, and the Voodoo Platoon’s role as “combat multipliers” basically means they’re the guys sent in when the brass wants plausible deniability. The worldbuilding is dense but never dull, packed with jargon that somehow feels organic, like you’re eavesdropping on soldiers who’ve been at this too long. Christopher Ryan Grant’s performance is a masterclass in balancing tone. He nails the dark humor—especially in the banter between the platoon’s oddballs—but when the action hits, his voice tightens into something feral. The production is clean, though I’ll admit the sound mixing during a few of the louder battle scenes made me fiddle with the volume. My only real critique? The pacing *occasionally* stumbles when Cole leans too hard into the tech explanations (I don’t need a three-minute breakdown of how a railgun’s magnetic coil works mid-firefight), and one subplot involving a rogue AI felt undercooked compared to the rest. But those are quibbles. This audiobook is a rare beast: a military sci-fi that’s as smart as it is visceral, with a narration that makes you feel like you’re right there in the dirt, laughing as the world burns around you.
