About This Audiobook

In 'Walter's Purple Heart', Catherine Ryan Hyde weaves a mesmerizing tale of two lives separated by decades. Michael Steeb, a 21-year-old pot farmer in 1980s Central California, finds himself haunted by vivid memories of a life he never lived - that of Walter, a young soldier killed in World War II. Hyde's prose is evocative, painting a vivid picture of both eras, while Kirby Heyborne's narration brings these worlds to life with remarkable nuance. Heyborne's ability to switch between Michael's laid-back California drawl and Walter's more formal, wartime cadence is nothing short of impressive, making this audiobook a distinctive listening experience.

Editor's Review ★★★★

AudioBook Atlas

I was immediately drawn into 'Walter's Purple Heart', not just by the intriguing premise, but by Kirby Heyborne's captivating narration. He effortlessly switches between Michael's present-day slacker and Walter's wartime past, making each voice distinct and authentic. The pacing is steady, allowing Hyde's exploration of Michael's growing awareness of his past life to unfold naturally. I found myself completely invested in both Michael's journey to understand his past and Walter's tragic story. However, I did find the ending a tad too neat, which was my only critique of this otherwise engrossing listen. Overall, 'Walter's Purple Heart' is a unique blend of historical fiction and contemporary coming-of-age story that kept me hooked until the very end.
