Gabriel Michael’s narration alone elevates this from good to great—his portrayal of the unnamed protagonist is a masterclass in grit. There’s a palpable weariness in his voice, the kind that comes from being treated like a tool instead of a person, and it makes every moment of defiance feel earned. The story’s strength lies in its unpredictability; just when you think you’ve pegged the direction, Maverick flips the script with a twist that feels both shocking and inevitable. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. The rapid-fire pacing, while engaging, occasionally glosses over key emotional beats, leaving some character dynamics feeling underdeveloped. And while Michael’s performance is stellar, a few supporting characters—particularly the villains—come across as caricatures, their one-dimensional cruelty undermining the nuance elsewhere.
