About three hours in, Anspach pulls a move so ruthless I actually paused the audiobook to yell at my headphones—because it *worked*. This isn’t a story that coddles its characters or its audience. The Rangers’ mission to secure a foothold on the planet X-73 goes sideways fast, and the book’s genius lies in how it forces you to live in the chaos alongside them. No deus ex machina tech, no last-minute reinforcements—just a handful of soldiers making terrible choices with dwindling ammo and rising body counts. Bray’s narration amplifies the tension; his pacing is deliberate, almost claustrophobic during firefights, and his ability to voice distinct characters (from a grizzled sergeant to a green private) keeps the large cast from blending together. That said, the book isn’t without flaws. The alien ecology, while creatively grotesque, sometimes feels under-explored—we get vivid descriptions of the threats (and oh boy, are they nightmarish), but the *why* behind the planet’s hostility remains vague. And while the tactical detail is immersive, a few engagements drag slightly under the weight of acronyms and gear specs. Still, these are quibbles. The final act delivers a gut-punch ending that lingers, and the audio production’s use of dynamic volume (whispers nearly inaudible, gunfire jarringly loud) makes it a *must* for headphone listeners.
